Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give them – to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot.

Joshua 1:2-3

Moses, the leader of Israel, died and the baton was passed to Joshua.

God instructed Joshua to get ready to cross into the Promised Land – the place of their inheritance – the place they had been traveling to for so many years. Now the time had come to finally see the fulfillment of the long-awaited promise, and Joshua was probably afraid. Did he have what it took to lead these people? Was he a strong leader like Moses, or would he crack under the pressure? Would others compare him to Moses, or worse still, would he compare himself to Moses? God must have heard his thoughts because he spoke to Joshua words that have been quoted throughout the ages – I will give you every place where you set your foot – and then words that drove his fears away:

Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. (v.9)

Have you ever had to follow another leader wondering if you could ever fill their shoes? Have you ever wondered why God would ask you to do something that you did not feel qualified to do? God is not looking for qualified people to answer His call. He is looking to qualify those who look to Him to answer the call. Joshua had been with Moses and had observed and participated in leadership. In many ways, he was equipped to do the job, but God knew that Joshua needed words of encouragement because Joshua was dependent on God. Joshua had spent many hours outside of the tent of meeting when Moses met with God and knew that He needed God to go wherever he went.

Has God called you to do the impossible? Have you told Him that you are under qualified for the job? Remember that He gives grace to the humble and strengthens the weak.

Heavenly Father, I confess that I am afraid to step out in faith and do what You have called me to do. Give me the courage to trust You and know that You will be with me wherever I go. In Jesus’ name, Amen
