And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth.

John 14:16-17

Webster’s dictionary defines “purpose” as intention or determination. To be purposeful is to be intentional or deliberate in accomplishing something.

Over the past few years, much has been written on being purposeful. All of the writings have had one thing in common: to accomplish something, you have to give it thought, set a goal, and then purpose to do it. It doesn’t do any good to have a plan if you aren’t intentional about carrying it out. So it is with being a witness for Christ. The Holy Spirit will guide us in what to say, whom to say it to, and how to say it, but we must take the initiative and be obedient.

As citizens of the kingdom of God, we are called to be witnesses of the love of Christ. We must be determined to trust the Holy Spirit to direct us to persons who need Him and be purposeful to share the good news. We do not want to look back on our lives and realize that although the Lord’s blessings were bountiful to us, we can hardly remember leading anyone to Christ. I try to remember at the beginning of each day to pray for divine appointments – to pray for God to send people into my life who need to know Christ. It is amazing the opportunities He brings! Being intentional allows us to open our eyes and hearts to see God at work and to participate with His plan.

Jesus promised to send His Holy Spirit to lead us, and when we call on Him, He will direct our path.

Heavenly Father, Help me to be an intentional witness for You. Lead and empower me by Your Holy Spirit to be deliberate in following You. In Jesus’ name, Amen
