Foretelling His death, Jesus tells His disciples that He will be with them for only a little while longer. He then gives them a commandment to love one another as He loved them. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Jesus reminded his disciples of the Great Commandment in the Old Testament to love the Lord God with all their heart and soul and mind and to love their neighbor as themselves. So why did He say it was a new commandment? To love in this way required a new heart and this is why He came; to give us a new heart- one able to love as Christ loved. On this side of the cross, we have the Holy Spirit transforming us to become love; transforming us to love as Christ loved.
