Concealing Sins

So, do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed or hidden that will not be made known.

Matthew 10:26

Jesus Christ told His disciples that all hidden things will be revealed.

David walked with God and writes: Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:22-23) One day David fell. When he saw something he wanted, he took it. Then he tried to conceal it with another sin. Yet he was the one who prayed for God to expose his dark and offensive ways.

Paul also understood the trap of temptation and writes: For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing. (Romans 7:18) He struggled with doing those things he did not want to do and recognized the futility of his struggle with sin apart from Christ. He knew that only God, through Jesus Christ, could offer him hope. (Romans 7:25)

As believers, we have been called to walk in the light of Christ and to have a willingness to allow the Holy Spirit to bring truth and correction into the dark places of our lives. When we find ourselves in sin, we must be willing to expose the sin to the light of Christ, seek forgiveness, and turn back to Him. Today’s Scripture reading in Matthew reminds us that all hidden things will be made known, and it is best to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal those things so that we can deal with them.

What secrets does the Lord wish to come into the light? Do you need to ask someone to forgive you because you have held onto a grudge or perhaps have not dealt with them fairly? Have you been dishonest in any way assuming no one would find out? Have you lied about something? Ask the Lord to reveal what is in your heart and bring all things into the light. You will find freedom when He brings you out of the darkness into the light.

Heavenly Father, I have held onto (fill in the blank) for so long. I know that it has been a place of darkness in my life and I desire to bring it into Your light. Search my heart for all offensive ways and lead me back to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen
